Notes for Robert Eyre:

The great Derbyshire family of Eyre seems to have originated at Hope. "William Le Eyr", of Hope, in the reign of Henry III, held lands there of the King in capite by service of the custody of the Forest of the High Peak; and his son "Robert Le Eyr" of Hope under the same tenure of Edward I. They were what were called Foresters of Fee, under the chief official or Bailiff. Their descendant Robert, the third son of Nicholas Eyre of Hope, married, in the fifteenth century. the heiress Joan de Padley, and was the ancestor of the Eyres of Padley

Robert Eyre bap.1392, the third son of Sir Nicholas Eyre and his wife Joana Barlow, at Hope Derbyshire. His brothers were, Nicholas Eyre the eldest who settled in Maltby, Yorkshire and William Eyre the second son who settled in North Lees, Derbyshire.

Robert Eyre married Joana de Padley. The Padley’s it is thought were named Bernake, and took name Padley when they settled there. The coat of arms of Bernake and Padley are the same. Apparently Robert Eyre was not considered favourably by Joana’s guardian and I have read two conflicting accounts

1.The couple met secretly at Stony Middleton, a quite place in the Hope Valley, where later in their marriage Joana built a chapel to commemorate the safe return of Robert from the battle of Agincourt 1415. Unfortunately I believe that they were married around 1421.

2.That Robert with the help of some of his relations, carried Joana off by force to marry her.

A reason for not being welcome by the Padley’s may have been as a result that Robert’s father Sir Nicholas Eyre was under ban by the church for activities during battles that he was involved in. There is no mention what the activities were.

Notes for James Butler:

Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1391-3, purchased Kilkenny Castle 1391 from Sir Hugh le Despenser

Gowran, Co. Kilkenny, was the principal seat of the family before they moved to Kilkenny Castle, and James, son and successor of the 2nd Earl, was sometimes called Earl of Gowran. This 3rd Earl built a castle there and it was he also who purchased Kilkenny Castle from Hugh Despenser between 1391 and 1393. The stronghold, probably on the site where the ancient Kings of Ossory had their fortress, was built in 1191 by William, Earl of Pembroke, husband of Strongbow's heiress, and passed through the female line to the vendor. Ormond acquired it in time to entertain Richard II here; perhaps that King, who is said to have invented the handkerchief, derived his inspiration from Irish linen. Being fluent in Irish, the 3rd Earl was able to improve his relations with the O'Neils, O'Briens, O'Connors and MacMurroughs, and to forge bonds of amity with the O'Kennedy sept that brought a measure of peace to North Tipperary for four centuries. In 1405 he died at Gowran and was gathered unto his fathers there. Like his father, he had been several times governor of Ireland, but unlike the Chaste Earl, he had a number of illegitimate children, including Sir Thomas Butler, the lame Prior of Kilmainham, by an unknown mistress, and four sons by Katherine, daughter of Gerald the Poet, the 4th Earl of Desmond. However, he also had two legitimate sons by the daughter of Lord Welles--James, his successor, and Sir Richard Butler of Knocktopher, the ancestor of the present Lord Ormonde. Notes for Stephen Eyre:

The romantic legend, which has been handed down through the centuries, has been based on the Battle of Hastings, at which a companion of William the Conqueror named Truelove came to the assistance of William who had been dislodged from his horse and his helmet had been crushed across his face so preventing his breathing. Truelove removed the helmet sufficient to restore his airway William inquired as to his name and said hence forth you shall be known as L'Eyr for you have given me the air to breathe. At the conclusion of the battle William inquired as to the fate now L'Eyr and was told that he had lost a leg during the fighting as a result the coat of arms bears a " a human leg in armour couped at the thigh quarterly argent and sable spurred....." as well substantial land holdings in Derbyshire.

However the record in the Domesday Book would support they were of possible Saxon origin and descended from the "Keeper of the Hounds, Edward" whilst not of noble blood the association by appointment was maintained over the generations.
