Notes for James Butler:
Called the Noble Earl and by the Irish the Chaste. Constable of Dublin Castle 1349. Chief Governor of Ireland
He [James, 1st Earl of Ormond] was succeeded by his seven-year-old son, James, whom the Irish called "The Chaste", which was certainly a distinctive epithet where the Earls of Ormond were concerned. He was also called "The Noble Earl" because he was the grand-grandson of Edward I and Eleanor of Castile. In the Ormonde MSS is an interesting charter of 1341, where Edward III calls him "Dilectus consanguineas et fidelis noster Jacobus Comes d'Ormond et de Carrick", which suggests that even at that period his grandfather had been regarded as hereditary Earl of Carrick. The 2nd Earl of Ormond spent most of his life in Ireland where the considerable estates he had inherited were augmented by grants for his good services. He was several times governor of Ireland, although he refused the post in 1381. Despite a stammer, he successfully proposed marriage to the daughter of his guardian, Lord Darcy. In 1382, the Earl died at Knocktopher aged 51, and, like his father, was buried in Gowran, not as sometimes stated at Kilkenny. [Butler Family History]

Notes for James BUTLER:
BUTLER FAMILY HISTORY
Edmund was succeeded as 7th Butler by his teenage son, James, a liberal, pleasant and stately youth. As soon as James was 21 he was knighted. A year later he married the king's niece, Eleanor de Bohun, and, in the following year, October, 1328, he was created Earl of Ormond. As in the case of his father's "earldom" of Carrick, the creation charter is missing; but the earldom of Ormond was probably limited to the heirs-male, despite, the weighty opinion to the contrary of J. H. Round. The question did not arise until the death of the 7th Earl in 1515; but it may well arise again when the Ormonde Marquessate becomes extinct. [Note: the last Marquess of Ormond died in Chicago in 2001.]
A few weeks after he was created Earl of Ormond, James was granted, by Edward III, the regalities and liberties of Co. Tipperary. Later the king saw fit to seize all the Counties Palatine in Ireland, of such importance had they become. But the Palatine of Tipperary was restored to Ormond on account of his royal consanguinity by marriage. This was the period of the overmighty subject that led to the Wars of the Roses. Ormond himself had extensive and widely distributed properites. Yet he lived and fought chiefly in Ireland where, in the flower of his youth, he died in his manor, a stone tower covered with shingles, at Moyalvi, Co. Tipperary. [Butler Family History]

Notes for John Delves:
Delves of Apedale, prospered initially in the following of Sir James Audley of Heleigh and later in the military administration of Edward, the Black Prince. In 1352 the family acquired the nearby Cheshire manor of Doddington and in 1365 received a licence to crenellate their mansion there. A tower house or pele tower of this period still survives. Sir John Delves, the builder of Doddington, had achieved prominence as a courtier in the household of the Black Prince and in the administration of the Principality of Aquitaine, and may also have been the builder of the nave and aisles at Audley.
At the time of William the Conquer, the manor of Hilderstone was held by Vitalis, of Robert of Stafford. The manor then passed to the family de Hugglesford. From them it passed to Sir John Delves. His daughter, Helen, married Sir Robert Sheffield, who became Recorder of London.
Hilderstone remained in the ownership of the Sheffield family for a time.
The heroic exploits of Lord Audley and his four Cheshire esquires, Sir John Delves, Sir Thomas Dutton, Sir Robert Foulshurst, and Sir John Houston, at the Battle of Poictiers, in 1358, are well known.

Notes for Earl of Karryk Edmund BUTLER:
Edmund Butler le Botiller; granted 1 Sep 1315 a fief consisting of the castle and manors of Karryk Macgriffyn and Roscrea, whereby he has been by some sources referred to as Earl of Carrick, though the weight of evidence militates against this. [Burke's Peerage]
Edmund Butler, a feudal lord in Ireland (1290-1321) received, 1 Sep 1315, the feodum of the castle and manors of Karryk Macgriffyn and Roscrea, to him and his heirs, sub nomine et honore Comitis de Karryk. This appears, however, to have failed in creating him EARL OF CARRICK, and he is seldom so described (d). He d. 13 Sep 1321, and on 2 Nov 1328 his son and heir (as "James le Botiller") was creatied Earl of Ormond. [Complete Peerage III:60]
(d) See, however, Patent Roll, 23 Nov 1316, "Mandate to Edmund le Botiller, Earl of Carryk, to deliver Roger de Mortimer the Rolls belonging to the office of Justicary of Ireland, which he lately held"; also Patent Rolls, 4 Nov 1317, where he is called "Earl of Carrick in Ireland." In later references to him the style is omitted
The 5th Butler [Theobald] stood fifth on the Roll of the Irish Parliament of 1295 without any territorial designation, which indicates that the Chief Butlerage of Ireland carried with it the status of a baron at least. He then accompanied Edward I to Scotland when the Coronation Stone was purloined and in 1299, at the age of 30, died unmarried.
He was succeeded by his brother, Edmund, aged about 26, as 6th Butler. Edmund is an enigma. Like many of his family, he was governor of Ireland. But it was with some reluctance that he accepted the post. Perhaps he had no desire for high office, especially under such an inept monarch as Edward II. Whether his governorship was a success is open to question. It was bedevilled by the Scottish invasion of Ireland under the Bruce brothers and very likely Edmund was no match for them as a general. Yet, he was said to have bestowed peace on the land so effectually that he was able to travel from his barony at Arklow to Limerick, guarded by no more than three horsemen, and his services were recognised and rewarded. In 1315, Edward II granted him the castle and manor of Karryk MacGriffyn and Roscrea to be held by him and his heirs, under the name and honour of Earl of Karryk. Whether there was an accompanying charter actually creating him Earl of Carrick is not now known. He was so styled in a mandate witnessed by Edward II himself at York in 1316, and also, although sporadically, in the Close, Patent and Fine Rolls. But it was an ephemeral earldom and no one knows why. Historians have argued endlessly about it. The explanation could be that in the circumstances the title was of no real consequence. Edmund was already hereditary Chief Butler of Ireland and, as such, had a high place in Parliament. So "Earl of Karryk" may not have meant a great deal to him. Unlike his father-in-law, who bleated that he had the title but not the fleece of Earl of Kildare, Edmund had the fleece but no need for the title of Earl of Carrick. On the other hand, allegations of treachery which were later made against him, though false, may have swayed the wayward king against Edmund.
At all events, with his fair name cleared, he turned to more lasting things in the evening of his life, and in March, 1321, set forth with his devoted younger brother, Thomas, 1st Lord Dunboyne, for Spain, on a pilgrimage to the shrine of St James of Compostela. Spiritually so fortified, Edmund died on his return to London in September; and to this day the Dunboynes bear three escallop shells on their shield to commemorate that pilgrimage. It was performed more than 150 years before Pope Sixtus IV placed pilgrimages to the shrine of St James on official equality with those to Rome and Jerusalem. [Butler Family History]

Pleshey Castle is a fine surviving example of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle dating from the 12th Century. Earthworks comprise the mound (on which formerly stood the castle keep), the defended outer bailey (housing accommodation for the castle staff, kitchens and chapel etc). In addition, the entire village still lies within a sweeping semicircular Norman bank and ditch, built to defend the town, whose own prosperity relied on the fortunes of the castle. The castle is mentioned in Shakespeare´s Richard II play
